If you haven’t decided where you want to go on vacation. Stay at home. It saves CO2, money, annoyance and often even your relationship.
The travel industry is one of the world’s biggest polluters. Sustainable progress is extremely slow. If we continue at the same pace, the travel industry will be just as polluting in 50 years as almost all other industries combined. It is not just about CO2 emissions from transport. But also the depletion of energy sources and water, the waste from hotels and holiday parks, the exploitation of workers in poor countries and the strain on the local culture with dollars and euros.
There is a growing awareness in the industry that we cannot continue on this road and that the travel industry is destroying itself if this continues. There are many small-scale initiatives, but the big players are also looking for opportunities to turn the ship in their sustainability department.
Staying home is rather boring however. So when you do go travel, choose the more sustainable travel agencies and ask critical questions about the important topics.
