The natives are coming

August 9th

About 370 million people in the world can be considered as indigenous to the land they live on. They are located in 90 countries and make up less than 5 percent of the world’s population. They represent over 5,000 different cultures.

We can learn a thing or two from these unique cultures and the way they deal with people and the environment. They have retained their own culture against the pressure of the dominant Western McDonalds culture that is increasingly manifesting itself in every corner of the world. Despite their cultural differences, those indigenous people do have a common problem, namely their rights to distinguish themselves as a separate culture.

Their rights have always been violated throughout history. Contemporary Indigenous people are indisputably the most disadvantaged and vulnerable groups of people in the world. Today is International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. In 2018 the theme was migration and movement of indigenous peoples

Due to the loss of their land, environments, and resources due to development and other forms of pressure, many indigenous peoples are migrating from their remote countrysides to urban areas in hopes of work and a better life. In Latin America, around 40 percent of all indigenous people live in urban areas.

Celebrate this day and share your concern about these disadvantaged nations.
